So let us tell you what you can expect when you honor us with a visit.
A brief description of our background may help you understand us.
We are a part of the "Restoration Movement", Our goal is to "restore" the new testament church in our time- to determine from the Bible what the church was like in New Testament times, and be like that. We believe this is a worthy and reverent goal.
We want to be a bible centered church. And we try to be. We recognize that our conclusions are not flawless, and we welcome constructive criticism. We will change any practice if shown we are wrong from the Bible teaching.
Every congregation of the church of Christ is autonomous.
Self administrated. Independent of all other congregations. Our rule is from heaven, not some ecclesiastical organization.
One of the unique things about our singing- and something you may find strange- is the music is " a capella" That is we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments.
This is a conviction with us, not just a preference. It is the way the Bible describes the New Testament church as they worshipped God.
(Ephesians 5:19 & Colossians 3:16)
There will be several prayers during the service. And there may be prayers for specific needs and requests. This also is according to the New Testament teaching.
If you visit on a Sunday morning, the Lord's Supper will be included in the worship proceedings- because the church of Christ observes this memorial every first day of the week.
Again the reason for this is our desire to follow the New Testament Teaching. ( Acts 20:7)
You will notice that the preacher doesn't have a title. He won't be referred to as Pastor or Reverend He will probably be referred to as brother, or Mister, or possibly, just called by his first name.
He won't be wearing any special clothing which sets him apart from others.
The reason for this is our belief in the priesthood of all believers. That all are equal. (I Peter 2:9).
Our contribution is only taken on Sunday.
This is the pattern in the New Testament
(I Corinthians 16:2) If you are a visitor, we do not expect you to give.
What Is Expected Of You?
Nothing at all! You are welcome to participate. But don't feel obligated to.
Just observe if that's your choice.
What kind of people can you expect to find when you visit a church of Christ?
Pretty much the entire spectrum, as in any group.
You will find people that make mistakes just like all people. But, you will find a people trying to maintain New Testament teaching.
We are a diverse group, coming from varied backgrounds, and at different stages of knowledge and spiritual growth.
We don't know everything. We don't always do everything right. And we make mistakes in our treatment of each other. In other words we haven't arrived- we're just on the journey.
But, you see, we were not brought together by any illusion of our perfection or righteousness. We were brought together by our recognition that we are sinners in need of the cleansing blood of Jesus.
You won't have to look very deep to find our failures as individuals.
But, the bottom-line, you will find a people who love Jesus, the Bible, and the souls of men and women.
